Note: In this essay, I made one big mistake, I was not coherent with the question and this could penalize my TOEFL score. I discussed this problem with my English teacher. I confuse the question, is not about “if college degree is useful or not, but why people take the college degree”
People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It is undoubtedly true that a college and university education increases people opportunities, generally, and specifically allows to gain new experiences.
This is especially true for STEM disciplines and a lot of statistics prove that.
However job opportunities can’t be the main reason, because without a true passion and curiosity for the subject you will suddenly became frustrated and the risk of drop out is high.
During my universities years I saw different friends switching faculties or dropping out, in my specific case, for example, after the Master in Civil Engineering I started learning Data Science.
People are aware that in a world becoming increasingly complex, college, and, education in general, is a path for survive.
Although some people could argue about the unusefulness of humanistic studies, I totally disagree with them and I must reply that a lot of business people studied Philosophy, like Reid Hoffman founder of LinkdIn, or Peter Thiel who studied Law.
Other people nowadays also declared that a college degree is worthlessness citing examples like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, but they are suffering of what scientists call survival bias, and is not a reliable statistic. [This paragraph, for example, is irrelevant to the question, the question is not if useful or not college but why]
Moreover, the latter three examples even without an official degree always studied and never stopped learning.
It is also important to ackwnoledge the positive influence that parents holding a degree has on their children.
In fact students with at least one of the parents with a degree tend to finish their studies with a higher probability compared with students with parents without a degree.
To conclude students have lot of pros in taking a college degree and few cons, is important to dedicate enough time to make the right choice and create a network of friends and families to support during this amazing journey.
